Where We Stand

In response to the many questions and concerns regarding policing in America today, we have put together a progressive plan to assist in answering questions and moving forward. A plan that brings change, action, transparency, accountability, and educates our community on where their West Lafayette Police Department stands during this time.

The West Lafayette Police Department is a full service municipal police department serving a community comprised of over forty-two thousand year round residents and a forty thousand Big Ten University student population.

The police department has a staff of over 84 employees, including 46 sworn officers whose mission is to protect and serve the community and provide a myriad of other police services.  The police department places a strong emphasis on crime deterrence through highly visible patrols including foot patrol, bicycle patrol, as well as motorcycle patrol.  A very strong emphasis is placed on education pertaining to crime prevention, traffic safety, drug and alcohol abuse, and child safety programs at all school levels and in presentations and programs to business and civic organizations.

We are dedicated to upholding the highest professional standards while serving the community in which we work and live.  We are committed to the enforcement of laws to protect life and property, while also respecting individual rights, human dignity, and community values.

The highly trained, dedicated professionals of the West Lafayette Police Department work closely with all area police departments in cooperative crime prevention programs and joint training exercises to ensure consistent, well-coordinated police service throughout the Greater Lafayette Community.  The high standards attained by the West Lafayette Police Department are a major contributing factor in the excellent quality of life enjoyed by the citizens of West Lafayette.
